Diabetic Shoe Benefit
Also known as: Therapeutic Shoe Program, Medicare Shoe Benefit
Medicare Part B's annual benefit covering one pair of therapeutic shoes and three pairs of inserts for qualifying diabetic patients.
The Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Benefit allows qualifying beneficiaries to receive one pair of depth-inlay shoes and three pairs of inserts, or one pair of custom-molded shoes and two pairs of inserts per calendar year. The shoes and inserts are covered under Part B as DME — Medicare pays 80%, supplemental plans pay the remaining 20%.
Qualification requires: (1) diabetes diagnosis, (2) one of five foot conditions — peripheral neuropathy with callus formation, history of pre-ulcerative callus, history of ulceration, foot deformity, or amputation; (3) management of diabetes by a treating physician; and (4) the treating physician certifying the medical need.
Shoes must be fit and dispensed by a podiatrist, orthotist, prosthetist, or pedorthist. They cannot be provided by the certifying physician. This separation prevents conflicts of interest.
For Phoenix metro seniors with diabetes, the shoe benefit is one of the most underutilized Part B DME benefits — yet it is one of the most impactful for preventing costly foot complications.
