Therapeutic Shoes
Also known as: Diabetic Shoes, Orthopedic Shoes
Specially designed footwear for people with diabetes that reduces pressure points and ulcer risk.
Therapeutic (diabetic) shoes are constructed with extra depth, wider toe boxes, and seamless interiors to eliminate pressure points and friction that cause ulcers in insensate feet. They are worn with custom or prefabricated diabetic inserts to further redistribute plantar pressure.
Medicare Part B covers one pair of therapeutic shoes plus three pairs of inserts per calendar year under the Therapeutic Shoe Benefit (Medicare National Coverage Determination 280.1). To qualify, the patient must: (1) have diabetes, (2) have one of five foot conditions, (3) be under a comprehensive diabetes management plan, and (4) have a certifying physician who is treating the diabetes co-sign the order.
The certifying physician cannot be the same provider who fits or sells the shoes. Shoes must be fit and dispensed by a podiatrist, orthotist, prosthetist, or pedorthist.
