Insulin Syringes
Also known as: U-100 Syringe, U-500 Syringe
Single-use syringes calibrated for insulin concentration (U-100 or U-500) used for vial-and-syringe insulin injection.
Insulin syringes are available in sizes corresponding to common dose ranges: 1/4 mL (25 units), 1/2 mL (50 units), and 1 mL (100 units). Needle lengths range from 4mm to 12.7mm; 4–6mm is recommended for most adults regardless of BMI per current injection technique guidelines.
U-100 syringes are calibrated for standard U-100 insulin (100 units per mL). U-500 syringes are calibrated for concentrated U-500 insulin (500 units per mL) — using the wrong syringe with U-500 insulin causes potentially fatal 5-fold overdoses.
Medicare Part B covers insulin syringes as DME supplies when the patient is also using insulin covered by Medicare. Coverage is up to 100 syringes per month. Syringes must be obtained from an enrolled Medicare DME supplier or pharmacy billing Part B.
