The Eversense E3 is a unique CGM system: unlike Dexcom and FreeStyle Libre sensors that are applied to the skin surface, the Eversense sensor is implanted just under the skin of the upper arm by a healthcare provider in a brief office procedure. The sensor lasts 180 days (6 months) before replacement.
An external Smart Transmitter worn over the implant site collects glucose readings and transmits them to a smartphone app. The transmitter vibrates on the body for on-body alerts without needing to look at a phone — useful in noisy environments.
Medicare Part B covers the Eversense E3 as a therapeutic CGM. The implantation and removal procedures are covered as physician services. Coverage criteria are the same as for other CGM systems. For patients who dislike daily or weekly sensor changes, the 6-month duration is a meaningful advantage.
