FreeStyle Libre 3
Also known as: Libre 3, Abbott FreeStyle Libre
Abbott's current continuous glucose monitor — a small coin-sized sensor worn on the back of the upper arm for 14 days.
The FreeStyle Libre 3 (Libre 3) is Abbott's current CGM system. It uses a 14-day sensor worn on the back of the upper arm. The sensor reads glucose every minute and sends data continuously to a smartphone app — unlike earlier Libre generations that required scanning the sensor to get a reading.
The Libre 3 Plus (approved in 2024) extends wear to 15 days and improves connectivity. Libre systems are known for their small sensor size and long wear duration relative to cost.
Medicare Part B covers the FreeStyle Libre 3 as a therapeutic CGM. Coverage criteria are the same as for other CGM systems. The Libre 3 can integrate with automated insulin delivery systems including the Omnipod 5.
