Diabetic Skin Care

Diabetes affects skin in multiple ways: autonomic neuropathy reduces sweating (causing dry, cracked skin); elevated glucose creates an environment favorable for fungal and bacterial infections; and poor circulation impairs wound healing. These factors make diabetic-specific skin care products more than a cosmetic consideration.

Diabetic foot creams (like Flexitol, Gold Bond Diabetics' Dry Skin Relief, Eucerin Diabetics' Dry Skin Relief) typically contain urea (10–25%) or lactic acid for deep moisturization, sometimes combined with salicylic acid for callus management. They are formulated without fragrances that can cause contact irritation in sensitive skin.

Barrier creams protect skin in areas prone to friction or moisture exposure. Antifungal powders and creams address the elevated fungal infection risk in intertriginous areas (between toes, under breasts, in skin folds). Medicare does not cover OTC skin care products, but they may be covered by Medicare Advantage OTC allowances.
