Diabetic Nutrition

Nutrition is central to diabetes management. No single 'diabetic diet' works universally — evidence supports multiple eating patterns, including Mediterranean, low-carbohydrate, DASH, plant-based, and very low-calorie approaches, depending on individual circumstances and goals.

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is individualized nutrition counseling provided by a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN). Medicare Part B covers MNT for people with diabetes at no cost when provided by a Medicare-credentialed RDN — 3 hours the first year and 2 hours per year thereafter.

For people on insulin, carbohydrate counting is the foundation of mealtime dosing. For Type 2 diabetes managed with non-insulin medications, consistent carbohydrate intake and overall calorie management are often the primary nutritional goals.

Diabetic nutrition products (protein shakes formulated for blood glucose management, low-glycemic-index foods, fiber supplements) are not covered by Medicare but may be addressed through an OTC benefit on some Medicare Advantage plans.
