Diabetes Self-Management Education
Also known as: DSME, DSMES, Diabetes Education
Structured education programs that teach people with diabetes to manage their condition — covered by Medicare Part B.
Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) is a structured program that teaches the skills, knowledge, and behaviors needed to manage diabetes effectively. Topics include blood glucose monitoring, medication management, meal planning, physical activity, foot care, sick-day rules, and prevention of complications.
Medicare Part B covers DSMES as a preventive service: up to 10 hours of initial DSMES within 12 months of a diabetes diagnosis (or becoming Medicare-eligible with diabetes), and 2 hours per year thereafter. The program must be provided by an ADA- or AADE-recognized program and referred by a physician.
DSMES documentation is also a prerequisite for some DME coverage — insulin pump coverage under Medicare requires evidence of diabetes education in the patient record.
